Am 10. August 1982 erhob das spanische Parlament die Kanarischen Inseln zur autonomen Region. Die erste Sitzung des Kanarischen Parlaments fand erst ca. 10 Monate später, nämlich am 30. Mai 1983 statt.
Am Tag der Kanaren gedenkt man dieser ersten Sitzung.
